The Highlands associates and residents participate in Memory Walk

In September 2009, associates and residents from The Highlands in Fitchburg, Mass., participated in the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk at a local community college in Gardner, Mass.
Eight associates, two residents, five adult day health care clients and many family members formed a team to raise money and show their support.
Lajja Nayak, activities director at The Highlands, said, “It was nice to have our residents take part in such a great activity. This is the first year in many that we were able to bring our residents because it was not raining.”
The associates volunteered at resource tables before the walk began. Some associates worked at the registration tables, giving out T-shirts or collecting donations, and others worked to prepare and play games with the kids.
Once the Memory Walk started, participants walked five laps around the track. One resident, Terry Brown, a native of Gardner, said, “I am really happy to be walking in the same place I walked when I was a young girl.”
This year’s Alzheimer’s Memory Walk proved to be a great team-building tool for the facility’s associates and residents, and they look forward to partnering as volunteers and walking to raise money in the future.
