How to Choose

When everyday tasks such as dressing, bathing and preparing meals become difficult, assisted living centers can provide needed care while allowing the individual to remain as independent as possible. To locate the best center, consider the needs of the individual and know the right questions to ask.

Determining needs

  • Discuss the extent of services needed with a physician to determine whether an assisted living community is the best choice. Regulations concerning the levels of care that can be provided in an assisted living setting vary from state to state. American Lifestyle's communities assess residents at the time of admission and assign a level of care. Throughout an individual's stay, regular assessments are conducted to determine if that level is still the most appropriate.
  • If assisted living is determined to be the best choice, obtain a list of local communities from your doctor, a social worker or a case manager. You can also get recommendations from friends, neighbors and your church or temple.
Questions to ask
  • Call the assisted living communities on your list and schedule a tour with their directors of marketing. During your tour, ask questions and evaluate each director's helpfulness and friendliness. Some suggested questions are:
    • What is the cost to live in this community?
    • What services and amenities does this price include?
    • Are there planned activities?
    • Is transportation provided?
    • Can I bring my car?
    • What is the cost for an additional person to live in the apartment with me?
    • Does this community allow pets?
    • How often are housekeeping and laundry services performed?
    • How is mealtime conducted?
    • How is the level of care determined?
  • Talk to residents and family members at the community. If you do not know any of them personally, ask the director of admissions for names and numbers, or ask to attend a resident council meeting to understand more about the community and its quality of care.
  • Consult with ministers who visit the community on a regular basis.
