On Feb. 1, 2019, Life Care Centers of America announced the winners of its 2018 Step Contest.

Life Care sponsors an annual wellness program in which associates in every skilled nursing and rehab center, as well as its corporate offices and affiliated Century Park independent living and assisted living communities, are encouraged to develop and track healthy habits. Each month, associates can submit the number of steps they have logged during the month for a chance to win a monthly or annual prize. Other activities, such as swimming, skiing and gardening, can be converted into steps, too.

Each year, three winners are chosen by a blind drawing.

For 2018, Tagisia Bucio, director of health information management Life Care Center of Escondido, California, won the grand prize of $3,000 and three vacation days.

“I was shocked to say the least,” said Bucio. “I never, ever thought that I would be the grand-prize winner. When I told my brother, he said, Sis, you work for a great company. You deserve this.’”

Bucio said she started recording her steps in 2005 and would fax her log to wellness. In 2015, she began to register and has not stopped competing. With her winnings, she plans on visiting her homeland of New Zealand for a family reunion.

The recipient of second prize, winning $2,000 and two vacation days, was Heather Knight, business office director, at Highland Cove Retirement in Salt Lake City.

A mother of five, Knight said she earned her steps by walking around the baseball complex while her children practiced. With her winnings, Knight plans to take her family to Disneyland while attending her children’s baseball tournaments.

“I was so excited when I learned of my winnings,” said Knight. “I am very grateful for my award. It brought tears to my eyes.”

The third-prize winner was Zane Yazzie, maintenance assistant, from The Bridge at Farmington, New Mexico. Yazzie received $1,000 and one vacation day. He achieved his steps by keeping track on his phone during and after work. Once he started tracking his activities, he was motivated to become even more active, which resulted in weight loss.

“I have never received anything like it,” said Yazzie. “It was more motivation to continue my step count and it also encouraged others to enter theirs.”

Life Care congratulates its winners and all who participated in the wellness program throughout 2018!

The 2019 Steps Contest is underway, and associates can again win these cash and vacation prizes. Please see the Wellness site on the Village Square for more details and rules.
