Janis Hammons: From a Lengthy Hospital Stay to Home

Janis came to Berkley Manor on 12/30/23. She admitted from UCHealth after having many complications from bariatric surgery resulting in a lengthy hospital stay. Her complications included an altered mental status that they discovered was due to a large intraventricular hemorrhage. She had to have a G-tube placed, & had acute respiratory failure.

At admission, Janis was on 2 liters of oxygen, receiving nutrition through a tube feed, otherwise on a modified texture diet. She required maximal to dependent assistance for bed mobility, mechanical lift for transfers, and max/dependent for ADL/self-care tasks. She had impaired strength and ROM due to her long stent in the hospital as well.

Speech therapy improved her to a regular texture diet, and her G-tube was removed. Physical therapy improved her from a mechanical lift transfer to now climbing 6 stairs with minimal assistance. Occupational therapy improved her to a moderate assist level for self-care tasks from dependent in bed. She no longer requires oxygen during the day.

"Janis went from flat on her back to all that!" - Michael Uebbing, OTR

Janis will discharge back home with her husband. Her remaining barrier is to conquer 12 steps to get into the home. She is looking forward to getting back home to bake cookies, and assist her grandchildren with their homework.

Berkley Manor therapists would like to thank Janis, and her supportive family, for trusting us to improve her function & strength. Please contact Admissions for any therapy needs at 303-257-5247.
