Preparing for a Short-Term Therapy Stay: What to Expect

You’ve just finished your hospital stay, and now you’re eager to return home and get back to your life. But, your physician informs you that you’re not ready to go home just yet.

Though your surgery is complete or your immediate medical needs have been met, you still need time to heal, rebuild strength, and reclaim your previous level of function. That is why you may require a short stay at a rehabilitation facility.

If so, you probably have questions just like the ones below. Take a moment to read through our answers to those questions so that you can enter your short-term therapy facility with a spirt of comfort and confidence.

What happens when I arrive?

When you arrive at the facility, you will be greeted by reception and admissions professionals who will help you with your check-in process. If you haven’t had a tour of the therapy gym yet, they may show you around so that you can get a feel for the environment and equipment. From here, you may meet with your therapists to develop your personal care plan and create your therapy schedule.

Where will I stay?

Most facilities have comfortable private and semi-private rooms for inpatient therapy patients. These rooms are designed to maximize comfort and healing and are monitored by nurses, certified nursing assistants, and other care professionals who will make sure you have the support you need during your recovery.

Who will be with me?

During your stay, you will be with a variety of care professionals and facility staff, such as physical, occupational, and/or speech therapists and therapy assistants (depending on your personalized program), registered and licensed nurses, and certified nursing assistants. Administrative, social, and dietary professionals will also be available to answer any questions and concerns you may have.

What about food and amenities?

On campus, you may find full dining services that provide three delicious, nutritious meals a daily, as well as snacks, in their dining room. Campus amenities often include tasteful and attractive surroundings, free Wi-Fi, libraries and lounge rooms, and scenic, park-like outdoor areas. You may also be able to participate in scheduled social gatherings, games, and wellness activities, depending on your condition.

How long will my stay be?

While each patient has different needs, most stays are less than thirty days. Your therapists will create a care plan and schedule that they think will suit your personal needs and get you back to your old self as soon as possible.

What should I bring?

Be sure to bring a variety of comfortable clothing for therapy sessions, lounging, and sleep, along with any special items you’ll need for personal care, comfort, and entertainment.

Here is a brief checklist to get you started:

Clothing for therapy and down time

  • T-shirts
  • Sweatpants, stretch pants, or gym shorts
  • Pajamas, slippers, and a robe
  • Soft-soled shoes or athletic shoes

Toiletries and personal hygiene items

  • Toothbrush & toothpaste
  • Hairbrush or comb
  • Haircare products
  • Other dental care or hygiene products, such as dentures

Other items to bring

  • Assisted devices, such as a cane, walker, or customized equipment (wheelchair)
  • Entertainment items, such as books, a laptop, or magazines
  • Contact information for friends, relatives, and your primary care physician

Always check with the therapy facility to see what items they provide and if they have their own special what-to-bring checklist or suggestions on how to be your most comfortable during your stay.
