Short-Term Therapy Works! Recovery Stories for March 2025

Seeing our short-term therapy patients meet their recovery goals never gets old!

And we love to highlight these individuals as much as possible to celebrate our patients and inspire anyone who may be considering inpatient or outpatient rehabilitation for themselves or a loved one.

If you are wondering if short-term rehabilitation would benefit you and your family, take a look at the following success stories!

Choi at Life Care Center of North Glendale

Choi came to Life Care Center of Glendale after suffering a ground level fall that resulted in knee and head injuries.

Upon admission, Choi required total assistance with all her activities of daily living and mobility. She needed the help of two people due to her deconditioned state and fall safety concerns. Choi's rehabilitation experience included physical therapy and occupational therapy services five days per week.

The therapy team focused on strengthening her upper ad lower body improving her balance, and retraining her with daily living activities. In the process, they utilized various machines, adaptive equipment, and special communication strategies, as there was a language barrier.

After seven weeks of rehab, Choi transitioned to our long-term care unit for overall supervision and round-the-clock care.

At the end of her therapy program, she was able able to walk over 100 feet with handheld support, complete her dressing with set-up assistance, and use the bathroom on her own.

"I truly enjoyed working with Choi. She was so adorable and such a hard worker. She was always willing and happy to participate." –– Michele, Occupational Therapist

We want to congratulate Choi on all her efforts and for achieving her short-term therapy goals!

Patty at Parkview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center

While dealing with osteomyelitis, Patty ended up in the ICU––and almost died twice. After suriving those episodes, she was discharged from the hospital and admitted to Parkview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for rehabilitation.

When she arrived at Parkview, she was fully dependent, requiring aid with transfers, dressing, and bathing. She needed time to heal and adjust to her surroundings before beginning her therapy program.

Patty loved going to her physical and occupational therapy sessions. She expressed how much fun she had at bingo and at the ice cream socials. She said that the activities department had so many things every day and such a variety too.

Patty thought she would be wheelchair bound for life, but she completed her therapy program and is able to walk again! She said she's very proud of her success and gave tribute to therapists Brad and Lindsey, who were so encouraging, and to the nursing staff.

Now that she is finished with her short-term rehab, Patty is grateful to be alive and able to walk again.

"I'm proud of my success. I would recommend Parkview over and over again. This place is excellent!" –– Patty

We want to congratulate Patty and her very successful outcome. She worked hard for it!

Lee at Life Care Center of Elyria

After a hospital stay for respiratory failure with hypoxia and other medical concerns, Lee was too weak to return home.

So, he transitioned to Life Care Center of Elyria for comprehensive short-term rehabilitation to restore his prior level of ability and allow him to return home.

Upon admission, Lee showed weakness, impaired balance, and an inability to complete functional activities. He required assistance with transfers, walking, self-care tasks, stairs, and meal preparation. Lee had decreased memory and symptoms of aspiration pneumonia.

The physical, occupational, and speech therapist completed comprehensive evaluations of Lee. They formulated and implemented a dynamic, integrated treatment approach for Lee, with a goal of his discharging home. Lee participated in his individualized plan of care willingly and to much success.

At the end, Lee was able to complete all his self-care tasks, perform functional transfers, walk over 150 feet, and maneuver up and down steps on his own. His cognition had improved, and he had no difficulty swallowing.

Throughout his program, Lee also attended the "Life Steppers Fitness Club" twice a week, completing his own exercise
program in their outpatient gym.

"I was here when I had both of my knees replaced. They did a good job back then, so I knew they would do a good job now!" –– Lee

Congratulations to Lee and all of his success!
