Life Care Center of Carrollton resident perseveres despite polio

Gwendolyn “Gwen” Brotherton, a resident at Life Care Center of Carrollton, Missouri, has spent her life overcoming adversity and loving others excellently.

Gwen’s remarkable story has helped her develop strength, wisdom and a strong understanding of life that she has continually used to benefit others.

Her story began in 1950 when she was diagnosed with polio. At 19 years old, she faced serious physical limitations, yet she was determined to appreciate life despite this hardship.

“Polio made it harder to do things I needed to do,” said Gwen. “So, I just fought harder to do them.”

In fact, Gwen has become a well-known matriarch during her 65 years in Carrollton, raising nine of her own children, bringing six other children into her home and assisting with her 20 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren – all while managing her condition.

“I raised them with love and guidance and by taking them into my home,” said Gwen.

Gwen’s determination, experience and love have touched the lives of countless children, and she continues to share her wisdom at Life Care Center of Carrollton today, even though she is now wheelchair-bound.

“Gwen has been integral in welcoming and helping new residents by sharing her experience of transition into long-term care,” said Misty Kemble-Williams, social services director. “Her love and fighting spirit touch residents and associates at Life Care.”

From raising children to sharing love with her fellow residents, Gwen has tirelessly used the wisdom developed from her experiences to help others.
