Ms. Deborah James is a long-term care resident at Life Care Center of St. Louis. She began receiving physical and occupational therapies after she had seizures that led to decreased mobility and functionality.
When Deborah was admitted to therapy, she required moderate assistance for toileting, bathing, and lower body dressing and required assistance with bed transfers. She was able to walk only fifty feet with the help of a walker.
Occupational therapy addressed Ms. James's ability to perform her activities of daily living with exercises that helped strengthen her upper extremities and improve her balance and coordination. Physical therapy addressed her mobility skills with exercises that focused on increasing her lower extremity strength and improving her balance. She also learned to implement fall prevention strategies.
Deborah transitioned to our therapy maintenance program to maintain her current level of function, which includes the ability to transfer in and out of bed independently, walk with a walker over 500 feet, and perform activities of daily living on her own.
Her personal goal was to be able to walk outside. And now she is walking over 700 feet outdoors!
"Ms. James has proven hard work and the right attitude pays off in achieving your therapy goals. She has an infectious personality and has befriended all staff and residents. Her work ethic has influenced her success and made her a great patient to work with." –– Ryan Neal, Physical Therapy Assistant
