Minyuan Yuan: Overcoming Barriers

Ms. Yuan was admitted to Life Care Center of St. Louis after having a brain tumor resection at St. Louis University Hospital.

Upon admission, Ms. Yuan had aphasia, dysphagia, and weakness on the right side of her body. She could not eat without a tube. She also required full assistance with activities of daily living and bed and was unable to sit unsupported.

Physical and occupational therapies addressed her strength, balance, visual perceptual, and coordination to improve her independence with daily activities and transfers. Speech therapy addressed her swallowing ability to strengthen her feeding ability and communication skills.

Ms. Yuan's family came from China to support her during her recovery, which contributed significantly to her success. They reported they were very happy with the care she received in the facility.

Ms. Yuan is now able to eat a regular diet without a tube. She requires moderate assistance with activities of daily living and transfers and can walk a short distance with assistance. She began to regain movement in her right side and is now able to communicate with family and staff. She is discharging to a facility close to family.

Congratulations to Ms. Yuan on all of the progress she made in her physical, occupational, and speech therapy programs! We are so proud of her.

"Ms. Yuan has always been willing to fully participate in every therapeutic task presented to her. Despite her language barrier, she pushed herself to be better than the day before. She has been a joy to work with." –– Ryan Neal, physical therapy assistant
