The Westchester House helps Roland Burjack get back on his feet

When Roland Burjack fell and experienced resulting muscle weakness, the care team at The Westchester House in Chesterfield, Missouri, provided the care and recovery he needed.

Roland arrived on Aug. 8, 2020, needing total assistance for walking, standing, wheelchair mobility, bathing and dressing. He needed extensive assistance for sitting balance and transfers from one surface to another. He needed moderate assistance for bed mobility and swallowing and needed some help with cognition as well.

Physical, occupational and speech therapists worked with Roland five days a week to help him regain as much independence as possible. He has heart issues, so the therapists took his cardiac precautions into consideration in designing his treatment. They used the NuStep® exercise machine and strength training to help him reach his goals, as well as activities-of-daily-living retraining, cognitive exercises and swallowing exercises.

“Roland always gave 100-percent effort in therapy and was always willing to try something new any time he was asked,” said Melissa Mann, physical therapist.

Roland completed his therapy stay and moved into an assisted living facility on Nov. 3. He is now independent in his bed mobility, sitting balance and hygiene and at a supervision level for walking, transfers, standing balance, cognition and dressing. He needs minimal assistance with bathing and swallowing.

“The facility did a great job, and the staff of nursing and rehabilitation were great to work with,” said Roland.
