Oliver regains independence at Life Care Center of Charleston

After having surgery for pelvic fractures complicated by multiple myeloma (cancer in the blood plasma in the bones), Eva Oliver came to Life Care Center of Charleston, South Carolina.

When Oliver arrived on Oct. 26, 2019, she needed help with bathing, dressing, walking, standing balance and transfers, such as getting from a bed to a wheelchair.

Physical and occupational therapists worked with Oliver six days a week to help her regain her independence in these areas, and the team was successful in helping her reach her goals.

In occupational therapy, Oliver worked on her activities of daily living, as well as home management skills such as making the bed and light cooking. In physical therapy, she did exercises to increase her upper- and lower-body strength and improve her balance and gait.

"Mrs. Oliver is one of the most compliant, motivated and hardworking patients that I have ever had," said Beth Williams, physical therapist. "She has handled difficult weight-bearing restrictions and limitations, allowing good healing and excellent progress, while being so supportive and encouraging to her fellow patients."

Ann-Ray Crocker Hasty, occupational therapist, echoed those sentiments: "Mrs. Oliver has been a delight to work with and has remained cooperative and very motivated throughout her stay. Her positive attitude and sweet spirit have inspired all the staff and other patients."

Oliver is now independent in her ADLs, transfers and walking. She returned home on Dec. 20, just in time for Christmas, and is continuing to improve her mobility as an outpatient at Life Care Center of Charleston.

"The therapy team that worked with me is simply amazing!" Oliver said. "They taught me how to walk after my surgery. They encouraged me and gave me the support I needed to believe in myself. Hats off to the doctors, nurses and certified nursing assistants and all the other staff members on the Pebble Creek unit."
