Life Care of Cleveland helps local woman regain strength after COVID-19

On Aug. 25, 2020, Carole Cunningham moved into her new apartment at Garden Plaza at Cleveland.

Her move was only from across the bridge at Life Care Center of Cleveland, but the journey over the past month was much greater.

Carole and her husband, Frank, contracted COVID-19 in July, and although she survived, Frank did not. On July 26, Carole arrived at Life Care Center of Cleveland for physical and occupational therapies. She was weak and mourning.

“I wasn’t able to do a lot – just lie around,” Carole remembered.

It was quite a difference from what she was used to. She was independent at home before the coronavirus hit.

Kelly Newbould, physical therapist assistant, shared that physically, the biggest challenge for Carole was the loss of endurance. The physical therapy team worked with her on walking, balance and other mobility tasks, while the occupational therapy team worked with her on mastering self-care skills like dressing and bathing. Through the process, they encouraged her and comforted her in her grief.

“This gal did a lot,” Carole said of Newbould. “She made me feel so much better.”

Family has also been a big support during Carole’s recovery. After the staff helped secure an apartment for her next door at Garden Plaza’s independent living community, her daughter, who lives in the area, helped move her belongings into her new space and set her up for success.

Carole has made much progress.

“I can walk without the walker,” she said. “My balance is better. And my confidence is better.”
