On Dec. 2, 2020, Lawrence Land came to Life Care Center of Collegedale, Tennessee, very weak.
Lawrence had been in the hospital for three weeks for cellulitis, an infection, in his lower limbs. He had difficulty walking and needed extensive assistance for bathing. He needed moderate assistance with bed mobility and standing balance and some help with cognition.
Physical and occupational therapists worked with Lawrence five days a week, while speech therapists worked with him three days a week, to help him recover as much independence and mobility as possible. They used resistive gait training in all directions and balance challenges to help him improve in these areas.
“Mr. Land was so motivated and pushed through the hard days,” said Beth Choate, director of rehab services. “What an inspiration to work with and watch him make gains!”
“It was really nice here,” Lawrence said of his stay. “The nurses were really helpful. Therapy helped me with everything – walking, standing and balance. If I didn’t have good people like these that helped me, I would not be able to make it.”
Due to circumstances, Lawrence was unable to return to his previous living arrangements, and he was unable to gather items for a new apartment on his own. The staff at Life Care Center of Collegedale pitched in and provided him with a reception of household items and personal care items so he could have a good start in his new assisted living facility apartment.
“He was overjoyed,” said Beth. “It is great to be on such a good team of people who work daily to show our residents love and support in so many ways.”
Lawrence moved into his new apartment on Feb. 9, 2021.
