Life Care Center of Hixson helps Patricia Copeland get back on her feet

After a recent back surgery and a fall that fractured her humerus, Patricia Copeland needed help getting back to her prior level of function.

When Patricia came to Life Care Center of Hixson, Tennessee, on Oct. 6, 2020, she was unable to walk or stand. She needed extensive assistance with transfers from one surface to another, bathing and dressing. She also needed moderate assistance with bed mobility, wheelchair mobility and sitting balance, as well as minimal assistance with hygiene.

Physical and occupational therapists worked with Patricia to help her regain as much function as possible. Physical therapists used progressive weight-bearing as tolerated and gait training, advancing her assistive device from walkers up to stair training. Occupational therapists trained her in her basic and more advanced activities of daily living.

“She was very determined and hard-working,” said Crystal Womack, physical therapy assistant. “She was very involved and structured as she organized her medical appointments and communication. That helped her coordinate her care and return to prior level of function.”

Patricia returned home on Dec. 10, 2020, independent in her bed mobility, transfers, sitting balance, hygiene and dressing. She is at a supervision level for walking, standing and bathing.

“I appreciate the therapists working with me and helping me to do things on my own,” said Patricia. “They were very thorough. The certified nursing assistants are friendly and make you laugh and feel better.”
