Patient injured fleeing fire regains independence at Life Care of Hixson

Chattanooga, Tennessee, resident Burnett Hughes, was involved in a house fire on May 15, 2020, and broke her left hip while escaping down the stairs.

Burnett arrived at Life Care Center of Hixson, Tennessee, on May 18, unable to walk, stand, move around in bed, get in or out of bed or bathe herself. She needed extensive assistance with getting dressed and sitting balance.

Physical, occupational and speech therapists worked with Burnett five days a week. Physical therapy addressed strength, balance, posture, lumbar stability, range of motion and gait, while occupational therapy worked on helping her become independent in her self-care, and speech therapy addressed the mild cognitive deficits she suffered as a result of her accident.

“Burnett is a delightful and positive person,” said Dana Masic, physical therapist assistant. “She has never let her situation get her down or hold her back from achieving her goals.”

“The facility is nice, and all staff were polite and friendly,” Burnett said. “If I ever have to come back, I would stay here.”

Burnett has progressed in all areas of her plan of care. She is now at a supervision or independent level with all her activities of daily life and mobility.

Although the house involved in the fire was lost, Burnett was able to go home with her granddaughter on Aug. 25.
