Joyce Cummings recovers from COVID-19 at Life Care Center of Sparta

Joyce Cummings, a retired teacher, came to Life Care Center of Sparta, Tennessee, on Aug. 18, 2020, to recover her strength after being ill with COVID-19.

Joyce was in the hospital for almost a month.

“When I got sick, I knew I wanted to come to Life Care Center of Sparta,” said Joyce. “I had been there before and knew they had the best therapy team.”

Joyce needed total assistance for most of her mobility and self-care, including walking, bed mobility, balance, bathing, grooming, and self-feeding.

Physical and occupational therapists worked with Joyce to meet her goals and regain as much independence as possible. Therapists worked on strengthening, transfers (such as getting from a bed to a chair) and endurance.

“I did not think I would be able to walk again when I got here, and now I’m going home,” Joyce said. “I know I would not be where I am today if it weren’t for the staff at Life Care Center of Sparta.”

Joyce is now independent with her sitting balance and self-feeding. She is at a supervision level for walking, bed mobility, transfers (such as getting in and out of bed), standing balance, hygiene, bathing and dressing.

She returned home to her family on Nov. 11.
