On June 14, Life Care Center of Brookfield raised $3,700 through a fundraiser to support community member Joey Breeden, who was recently diagnosed with cancer.
Joey Breeden is the son of Lisa Breeden, a beloved associate who has served the center as a certified nursing assistant since 2002.
“When we heard about Joey’s cancer, we knew we had to do something to help Joey and Lisa,” said Carl Wright, executive director. “Joey is very well known in the community. He is the No. 1 Brookfield High School Bulldogs fan in Brookfield and is at all the games supporting them. Any time you run into Joey out in the community, he is always full of smiles and fun!”
Lisa Breeden expressed her gratitude for the associates and residents at the center who showed support for her son.
“I thought that was really nice,” she said about the fundraiser. “It was a blessing to me. It helped me and it made me feel good. Of course, Joey knows everybody in Brookfield, and he knows some of the nurses and people who work at Life Care, so he really enjoyed it.”
“They are like family to me,” Lisa Breeden said about the associates and residents at Life Care. “I have respect for everyone who works there because they have respect for me, and they are like family.”
The center raised over $2,400 in donations for fresh hot dogs, cheeseburgers, and chips provided by local businesses and through a silent auction with donations from community members, the Brookfield police and fire departments, and more than 14 local businesses and families. The center also made and sold $1,300 worth of “Joey Strong” T-shirts, bringing the total raised money to $3,700 in just four hours.
“It was truly an awesome experience!” said Wright. “We live in a great community, and it was awesome to see everyone come together to support Lisa and Joey. It was so great to see the smile on Joey’s face.”
