Life Care Center of Estero helps COVID survivor recover through rehab

When Robert Renza acquired COVID-19, he developed pneumonia and had to be treated in the hospital. He came to Life Care Center of Estero for rehabilitation on Dec. 9, 2021, for help in recovering strength, mobility and independence.

When Robert arrived, he could only walk 100 feet at a time with a walker and someone to steady him. He had difficulty standing up from a sitting position and needed some help with bed mobility. He also needed help with activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing and grooming.

Physical therapists worked with Robert five days a week, using standing balance activities, gait training and leg exercises. He also used the NuStep® exercise bicycle to increase his endurance.

“Robert reached his goals with constant encouragement to perform more daily,” said Justin Guess, physical therapist assistant.

On Christmas Eve, Robert returned home with improved standing balance and at a supervision level for walking, standing up and bathing. He can walk up to 500 feet at a time with a walker and is continuing his progress as an outpatient, taking part in PT and OT twice a week.

“I am able to do more at home, some walking at home with no assistance or assistive device,” Robert shared. “I have increased my endurance.”
