Whatever It Takes Champions stories - November 2021

Life Care Centers of America’s Whatever It Takes Champions program honors associates who go beyond their job descriptions in caring for residents, their families and fellow associates. Here are four of the inspiring stories from our recent winners. These associates are certainly Champions of Care!

Rita Hopper, housekeeping aide

Rita Hopper, housekeeping aide at Mitchell Manor in Mitchell, Indiana, offered special support to a resident trying to lose weight. This resident had been using flavored water and peanuts for easy hydration and healthy snacking but had run out of both one evening. Without a thought, Rita made time to go out and purchase more flavored water and peanuts for the resident, helping them stay on track. While Rita’s main role is keeping cleanliness and order, she always makes time for a little kindness too!

Kenneth Mitchell, cook at Life Care Center of Bridgeton, Missouri, has served his fellow associates and residents both inside and outside of the facility for 13 years and counting. When a resident isn’t feeling well or is struggling with appetite, he will take special requests and customize meals that appeal to their taste. When residents are unable to venture out for their own personal shopping, he does not hesitate to pick up snacks, movies and other personal items to help them feel comfortable and at home.

John Milnichak, transport driver at Life Care Center of Casper, Wyoming, showed compassion and generosity when it mattered most. A resident needed a last-minute ride to see her sister, who was on hospice and very near to passing. Though John was not scheduled for transportation, he dropped everything to drive the resident, giving her a chance to have precious final moments with her sister and to say goodbye. That day, John showed what a difference we can make for others when we are willing to go the extra distance.

Kimberly Lape, certified nursing assistant at Life Care Center of Sullivan, Missouri, has spent more than 30 dedicated years serving residents – even during her personal time off. While navigating her own personal health issues, Kimberly has shown compassion to each resident, connecting with them by singing songs to lift their spirits and bring them joy. Her loyalty and heartfelt gestures truly embody the spirit of Life Care!
