We love to highlight our rehab graduates to celebrate their accomplishments and encourage anyone who may be considering inpatient or outpatient therapy for themselves or a loved one.
If you are wondering if short-term therapy would benefit you and your family, take a look at the following patient success stories for April 2026!

After a hip surgery, Betty experienced complications involving chronic swelling and pain that decreased her mobility and ability to complete self-care tasks.
She was referred to Life Care Center of Punta Gorda for short-term inpatient therapy services.
Upon her admission, Betty required partial-to-moderate assistance with bathing and lower-body dressing, moderate assistance with bed mobility, and minimal assistance with walking while using a walker.
Because of her pain and decreased strength, Betty developed a low tolerance for most activities.
Her personalized rehabilitation plan included physical and occupational therapies five days a week, focusing on therapeutic activities, therapeutic exercise, gait and balance training, and self-care retraining to increase her functional mobility and independence.
After just two weeks of therapy, Betty reached independent levels with all self-care tasks, mobility, and walking without a walker. She discharged back to her independent living community, where she immediately resumed her favorite activity, line dancing!
"I never thought I'd walk without pain again. Now I'm line dancing! I came in needing a walker and leaving without one. I'd recommend this place to anyone...the best therapy I've had. They truly know what they're doing. I wish I had found this place when I first had my hip done." – Betty

David came to The Highlands for short-term therapy following a surgery to repair a fracture in his left femur.
Upon his arrival, David was dependent with all activities of daily living, including bathing and dressing. He required help from two people with bed mobility and needed a mechanical lift for bed transfers. He was unable to walk and felt fear when attempting any kind of movement without help.
David participated in physical and occupational therapies five days a week. In physical therapy, David first learned relaxation techniques to reduce his fear of movement. He then participated in strengthening, range-of-motion, and mobility exercises.
In occupational therapy, he focused on maximizing his independence with retraining in activities of daily living.
When David met his goals and discharged home, he was completely independent with all mobility tasks and was able to complete his bathing and dressing routines without any assistance or fear.
"I think this place is great! I will definitely tell everyone to come here. My therapists, Matt and Diane, got me through this. If it weren't for them, I don't think I would have made it home." – David

Larry required short-term rehabilitation after having a stroke that caused expressive aphasia and weakness in his right side.
Upon admission to Life Care Center of Sullivan, Larry had minimal communication ability and a grip strength of 34.6 pounds. The occupational and speech therapists evaluated Larry’s condition and developed for him a personalized plan to address his issues.
In speech therapy, Larry improved his communication through various exercises, such as semantic feature analysis (a type of word retrieval therapy) and structured conversations. Occupational therapy focused on increasing his right-hand grip strength and improving his ability to perform functional tasks involving zippers and buttons.
Larry was able to improve his functional communication skills significantly and increase his grip strength to 41.6 pounds. He is now independent with activities of daily living, household management tasks, medication management, and blood sugar management.
"It has been the best experience for me and for my dad who needed rehab after having a stroke. They went above and beyond in helping me with the process, as I had no experience in dealing with anything like this before. The therapy my dad received was incredible, and his recovery defied even what the doctors were saying." –– Larry's son, Adam
