Story Feature

Jean Hendrickson, a resident at Life Care Center of the San Juan Islands in Friday Harbor, Washington, has had many opportunities to advocate for others in her life, and now she is being featured in a national magazine.

Life Care Centers of America runs more than 200 skilled nursing and rehab centers around the country and publishes a handful of residents’ life stories each year in its LEADER magazine. Hendrickson’s story was recently published in the 2016 edition.

Born in 1928, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Hendrickson has lived a full life. She grew up during the Great Depression and became a walking advocate for things she was passionate about. She was an activist for de-segregation and a counselor after the Roe v. Wade case. She found many open doors through her travels and different careers, one of her favorites being the opportunity to author two books: “We All Have a Purpose for Being Here: A Memoir” and “Joy: Living in a Nursing Home.”
