Cynthia Hartman, registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) at Life Care Center of Hilo, recently celebrated an impressive 21 years with Life Care Centers of America. She aims to inspire residents to think about nutrition as fuel and move their bodies each day—an example she sets in her own life.

In late March, Cynthia successfully completed the Lavaman Triathlon! This Olympic-distance triathlon is held annually on the Island of Hawaii and features a 1.5K ocean swim, 40k bike ride, and 10k run to finish.

This accomplishment reflects both her physical endurance and her commitment to a balanced, wellness-focused lifestyle.

The Journey to Hilo

Cynthia’s path to Hilo wasn’t exactly straightforward. She describes herself as an “Air Force brat,” having grown up in several places, including California, Idaho, Turkey, Germany, Texas, and Florida. She earned her bachelor’s degree in food and nutrition from Florida State University, initially planning to pursue sports nutrition.

However, early in her career, Cynthia found a job opportunity in long-term care and never turned back.

During her first two years out of college, Cynthia worked as a diet tech, dietary director, and completed a dietetic internship. She then joined Life Care Center of Jacksonville as an RDN in 2005, marking the beginning of her career at Life Care that has now spanned over two decades.

About 10 years ago, an opportunity at Life Care Center of Hilo led Cynthia and her husband to Hilo, Hawaii. Despite having never been to Hawaii before, Cynthia readily embraced the Hilo culture.

“Because of Life Care, my husband and I have been living our best lives here for the past decade!” shared Cynthia.

Inspiring Wellness

In her role, Cynthia focuses on supporting residents in ways that go far beyond meal planning. Whether she’s helping someone improve their nutrition or simply making sure they enjoy their meals, she takes a resident-centered approach, getting to know each person’s preferences, needs, and goals.

Cynthia believes that food is more than just something we eat—it’s fuel for living a full, active life. She encourages others to take a balanced, realistic approach to health.

Her philosophy is simple: small changes matter. Regardless of your age, adding a short walk to your day or making more mindful food choices can add up over time.

“I enjoy setting and working toward a goal,” said Cynthia. “Whether it’s training for a race or helping a resident meet their wellness goals, it’s about following through.”

This sense of purpose carries into her life outside of work.

Triathlons, Friendships, and Long-Term Care

Cynthia has been part of the running and triathlon community for years, completing around 25 triathlons ranging from sprint distances to Half Ironman events. Along the way, she’s formed lasting friendships and enjoys the competition.

“I like surrounding myself with optimistic, goal-oriented, and grateful people,” explained Cynthia.

The Lavaman Triathlon stood out, even among her many races. Knowing it would likely be her only triathlon of the year, Cynthia trained with extra focus and consistency. She also carried a sense of pride in representing both Life Care and her Hilo community.

“The less-than-optimal conditions on race day challenged each participant,” said Cynthia. “It made running across the finish line on a sandy beach even sweeter!”

Outside of work and racing, Cynthia enjoys camping, hiking, reading, traveling, volunteering, and spending time with her husband, family, and friends. She’s also gained a deeper perspective through her years in long-term care.

“Devoting my career to long-term care has been a constant reminder of how precious our time is and the importance of making each day purposeful and meaningful,” said Cynthia. “I count my blessings routinely and make it a point to not sweat the small stuff.”

From her colleagues to corporate leadership, Cynthia credits Life Care’s culture for creating an environment where she feels valued and encouraged, which has played a big role in her long tenure.

Congratulations, Cynthia, on 21 incredible years with Life Care Centers of America and your inspiring accomplishment in the Lavaman Triathlon! We’re grateful for your dedication and spirit that truly make an impact on the lives of our residents.
