There’s something about a hand-stitched blanket that seems to be a little warmer and personal, like a hug from a loved one.
The Florida Sewing Sew-ciety, North Palm Beach chapter, graciously gifted over 60 beautifully crafted, handmade lap blankets for residents at The Gardens Court in Palm Beach Gardens to snuggle up with. No two blankets were alike, created using various sewing methods including crochet and quilting.
The handmade blankets were a heartfelt and unique gesture as a thoughtful gift that might remind residents of their own family heirlooms.
One resident said, “This is perfect. I was just going to ask my daughter to bring me a new blanket.”
According to its mission statement, the Florida Sewing Sew-ciety is “dedicated to Florida residents and those vacationing here who believe that sewing in all its forms makes a difference in their lives and the lives of others. We inspire our members to enhance their sewing, quilting and other needling arts skills by connecting people of all ages and backgrounds… and encouraging volunteer efforts in cooperation with local and statewide charities.”
Stacy Valdivia, Sun States Region vice president, has a family friend who is a member of the Florida Sewing Sew-ciety. Their connection to The Gardens Court started in 2020 when COVID-19 first began in their area. They donated 100 handmade masks to the residents and associates.
“The Gardens Court is grateful to the members of the Sew-ciety for their generosity and time put into making these beautiful lap blankets,” said Kris Berntsen, executive director.
